Joshua (The Anchor Yale Bible Commentaries) |
 |
Title: Joshua (The Anchor Yale Bible Commentaries) Author: Robert G. Boling |
"Joshua" began as a collaboration between G. Ernest Wright, the distinguished biblical scholar and archaeologist, and his student, Robert G. Boling. After Wright's death, Professor Boling, who also did the translation and commentary for Judges, finished the task alone. Boling's extensive treatment includes not only an entire new translation of "Joshua" and a complete commentary on the text, but also comprehensive notes, numerous bibliographies, four pages of illustrations, and eleven maps especially commissioned for this volume. In addition to exhaustive research and excellent scholarship, there is also Dr. Wright's 135-page introduction, completed just before his death, which provides not only an informed foreword to the text of "Joshua" but also a summary of his previous writings on Israel's formative years.

Joshua: An Introduction and Commentary |
 |
Title: Joshua: An Introduction and Commentary (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries) Author: Richard S. Hess |
The book of Joshua is a story of God, who works powerfully on behalf of Israel and Joshua, fulfilling his covenant promises. It is God who leads Israel across the Jordan, God who defeats Israel's enemies, and God who presides over the apportionment of the land. And so in the final chapter it is God who receives Israel's worshipful recommitment at Shechem. In this new Tyndale Old Testament Commentary, Richard S. Hess explores these historical, theological and literary dimensions of the book of Joshua. An exceptional feature of his commentary is his careful consideration of the allocation of the Promised Land and the boundary lists the book of Joshua so prominently displays. And in a day when grave doubts have been raised over the historicity of the "conquest" story, Hess presents historical and archaeological evidence for placing the events of Joshua in the late second millennium B.C.

Joshua (Old Testament Library) |
 |
Title: Joshua (Old Testament Library) Author: Richard D. Nelson |
The book of Joshua describes the invasion, conquest, and division of the land of Canaan by Israel, pictured as a unified national group organized into twelve tribes and under the resolute leadership of Joshua, successor to Moses. Although the book is clearly the product of multilayered tradition and a process of literary growth, the final canonical form can be understood as a self-contained and coherent literary whole.
